In the proceedings, <strong data-start=\"371\" data-end=\"385\">Addiopizzo<\/strong> acted as a <strong data-start=\"401\" data-end=\"417\">civil part<\/strong> alongside the <strong data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"459\">only victim who filed <\/strong>a complaint, a business owner who, with the support of the association, managed to break free from the <strong data-start=\"531\" data-end=\"558\" data-is-only-node=\"\">extortion racket<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"559\" data-end=\"562\">The case, which came to light just over a year and a half ago, revealed the<strong data-start=\"635\" data-end=\"674\"> imposition of private security services <\/strong>on some businesses in Sferracavallo and forced <strong data-start=\"714\" data-end=\"753\">supplies of fish and seafood <\/strong>to various restaurants.<br data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"778\">The <strong data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"851\">civil party status<\/strong> of our association and of the only merchant who had the courage to report the crimes proved to be crucial in the trial. With Addiopizzo&#8217;s support, this individual was <strong data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"997\">freed from the grip of the racket<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1019\" data-end=\"1371\">It was thanks to a process of <strong data-start=\"1051\" data-end=\"1073\">listening and support<\/strong>, carried out alongside the victim, that the <strong data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1170\">decision to stand up<\/strong> and resist the extortion demands took shape and gained strength.<br data-start=\"1215\" data-end=\"1218\">This story confirms that a <strong data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1303\">system of protection and support<\/strong> has now been established\u2014one capable of providing the best possible conditions for those <strong data-start=\"1352\" data-end=\"1368\">who choose<\/strong> to report and break free from mafia influence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1373\" data-end=\"1792\">However, if we truly want to bring about a <strong data-start=\"1409\" data-end=\"1428\">decisive change<\/strong> and overcome criminal and extortion-related phenomena, <strong data-start=\"1490\" data-end=\"1502\">politics<\/strong> at all levels must <strong data-start=\"1520\" data-end=\"1584\">invest in addressing the deep pockets of poverty and degradation<\/strong> that affect the city. It is precisely from these conditions that deviant behaviors emerge\u2014areas where <strong data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1680\">fundamental rights<\/strong> such as <strong data-start=\"1698\" data-end=\"1706\">housing<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1711\" data-end=\"1721\">employment<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1727\" data-end=\"1741\">education<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1749\" data-end=\"1759\">healthcare<\/strong> remain out of reach for many.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1794\" data-end=\"1982\">We can no longer rely solely on the work of <strong data-start=\"1843\" data-end=\"1877\">magistrates and law enforcement<\/strong>.
